I tried before and it didn't work

You've changed since the last time – a lot of adult students find that they approach school differently the second time around. You’ve got more life experience now and probably have an even more clear sense of why you are coming to school than you did the first time. In fact, adult students often have a higher GPA than traditional age students. We also offer academic renewal which provides you an opportunity to establish a new GPA. Your counselor can help you determine if this would benefit you.

We have also changed! We offer online tutoring, more online classes, and a dedicated adult advisor as supports that might not have been in place the last time you were in school.

I will be the only adult

You will not be alone! Over one third of our students are considered "non-traditional" over the age of 25. They are balancing school, work, family and life, just like you!

Starting from scratch seems too hard

A degree may be closer than you think! Here are all the different ways you can earn credit towards your degree without sitting in class:

  • Credit for Prior Learning (CPL) also known as Prior Learning Assessment (PLA). Work with faculty to evaluate your experience, training and knowledge
  • Military training and transcripts
  • Previous college credits earned here or at another college
  • Standardized tests (CLEP, DSST, AP Exams)
  • Credit by examination (professional, written, or oral)
  • Credit for licenses or certifications
  • Pre-determined credit for training and certifications
    • Nursing Assistant Crosswalk Verification List
    • Multiple I.T. and Microsoft Office certifications

I don't have time

It can be daunting to think about going to college while trying to juggle everyday life. We understand and we can help, with programs and options aimed at working adults, like:

Logo says A.S.A.P. Adult Success through Accelerated Pathways

  • Part-time scheduling - work with our advisors for a customized plan that fits your life
  • You may be able to earn credit towards your degree with the knowledge and experience you already have!
  • Looking for short-term training options? Check out Skill UP by Minnesota State.

Child care is a challenge

We have flexible scheduling with accelerated, online, hybrid (combines in-person and online), evening and part-time options. Plus, you may be able to finish faster by counting your experience, training and knowledge as credit!

Child care grants: With a maximum award of $5,200 per eligible child per academic year, make sure to investigate this option from the Minnesota Office of Higher Education.

Day classes don't work for me

We offer flexible scheduling with an array of options to choose from, including accelerated, in-person, online, hybrid (combines in-person and online), evening and part-time options.

In fact, you can earn your A.A. degree taking only online courses or only evening courses. All Minnesota Transfer Curriculum goal areas are available with courses offered in the evening and online.

Talk to your advisor to learn more.

College is expensive

Inver Hills has one of the lowest tuition rates in the state. You can see tuition for all Minnesota colleges here.

Our financial aid advisors can help you apply for financial aid and our Foundation awards about $164,000 in scholarships each year.

I'm afraid I'll fail

We are here to help, with dedicated advisors who can guide you towards solutions and campus resources to help you succeed!

Knowledge is power. Learn more about yourself and your educational goals by taking the Strong Interest Inventory Assessment.

  • Learn if your educational path and career choice are right for you
  • Identify your work personality by exploring your interests and work style preferences
  • Contact a counselor to take the inventory

I didn’t realize how important higher education really was, and the opportunities it would open up for me. Looking back, it was one of the best decisions I’ve made.
