• First year communities (FYCs) are pairs of classes.
• You'll take both classes as part of a community of students.
• One class is a First Year Experience course that fulfills your goal 2 requirement. The other class is a commonly taken first-semester course like English, economics, art, sociology, or business.
• You'll learn strategies to help you succeed in your first semester.

• FYCs are led by experienced instructors who cooperate to support you and your fellow students.
• FYCs help you get to know other students since you take classes together.
• FYCs make it easier to understand course material and complete your assignments.
• FYCs introduce you to a range of on-campus services and resources.
• FYCs provide special activities and events.
• FYCs help you plan for your next semester and beyond.
• You can enroll in an FYC for no extra cost!

3. Talk with an Inver Hills advisor or counselor.
4. Register for a First Year Community during your registration & advising session.

What you’ll accomplish as a student in an FYC with other students:

1. Have at least two courses in common
2. Complete assignments and projects that count for two classes
3. Collaborate with like-minded classmates
4. Enjoy large university-level opportunities in a smaller, more supportive environment
5. Work with peer tutors whose goal is helping you learn
6. Participate in special activities and events
