Bio

James Leslie started teaching mathematics at Inver Hills in 1999. Jim has an M.A. in Mathematics with an Emphasis in Actuary Science from The Ohio State University. He has a B.S. in Math Education with a Minor in Computer Science from the University of Minnesota.

He has teaching experience at the following schools:

  • Dubin High School in Dublin Ohio
  • Ripon College in Ripon, Wis. (also the swim coach)
  • University of Arkansas at Monticello
  • NEI College of Technology
  • Several Minnesota State institutions

Jim has been nominated by students for Inver Hills Faculty of the Year on several occasions. Phi Theta Kappa students have recognized him as an outstanding teacher with multiple Golden Apple awards.

"To be kind, understanding and challenging while pushing students to levels they did not know they could reach," Jim said, regarding his teaching philosophy.

The best part of his job as an Inver Hills instructor is working with students of all abilities and backgrounds. He loves cultivating relationships with his students while helping them achieve their goals.

His interests include family, working at the family cabin and enjoying life. "For fun, I was the long-course national champion in the 200 meter backstroke in masters swimming way back when," Jim said. "Yes, I was the only person in my age group competing."
